Arunima Sinha - a monumental example of outstanding will-power

What will yo do if yo are severely hurt physically or mentally? Many lose hope and start living a pathetic life becoming dependant on others.
But, here is Arunima Sinha, who was thrown out of a train by train snatchers, run over by nearly 50 trains (over her legs), nearly eaten  by rats all night, got amputated below knee, undergone months of treatment and after all these trials and tribulations ...
She decides to climb everest and conquers it.
This is the big lesson you need to learn. When you feel encountered, rise above the expectations. Don't let others fix limit for you, you define and redefine your limit in life. If you never thought of doing something great, you may decide to do great things when you have nothing to lose.

Woman ,Womanhood and the World Around Her ?

Yet another International Woman's Day,we are observing at a time when even a female child of less than three years old becomes an object of sexual gratification for perverts .There is not a place that has become a safer place for woman, not even her own residence. Truth is strange , stranger than fiction. I sound rather grim ,you may think . But I hear only grim stories of atrocities against women these days.
They say that world has progressed by leaps and bounds and that it is at their feet. Today, man can do and undo anything that he pleases . Impossible is nothing for this man The bygone ages dwindle in their significance when matched with his performance, be it in Science, Technology or in any other field of life .Yes ,it is an emphatic 'Yes' but with some reservations.
The general perception is that as we evolve in the cycle of life , we become more refined in our caliber ,taste , and instinctive nature and that our approach to others will be marked by courtesy and civility .But what happens around us day in and day out ,proves the point that we have advanced scientifically and technologically only ,no emotional refinement .There is some kind of a mismatch between our intellectual growth and emotional development. In other words , our personality has attained disproportionate growth .Many of us, not all, fail to recognize the rights of women and treat them as inferior. Ironically, our country has the rich culture of venerating women.
At this time of the day when I am doing this post , I get deeply disturbing news about the atrocities against women in my home state of Kerela..On this day ,when we celebrate International Woman's Day ,I have many apprehension about the safety of woman. Nothing can save her.
It is time for the next Incarnation of Lord Vishnu (Kalki) or The Second Coming of Christ .Let us wait for it to happen.

20 Practical Tips and Tricks to reduce alcohol consumption

These tips are for habitual drinkers who want to cut down their daily intake of alcohol, not for alcoholics who are addicted to alcohol.

Regular drinkers might have started drinking as an appetiser and might have gradually increased the quantity.

A calm family atmosphere (devoid of quarrelling spouse, noisy surroundings, irritating situations etc) and good food at home are two essential things which would help you control your drinking habit.

The following tips will work only if you are desirous of reducing the alcohol intake or stopping the drinking habit gradually.
  1. Keep Track of monthly expense and amount of alcohol consumed. Reduce budget to affordable levels. Quite often, only when you track the consumption by regular recording/ writing in an expense monitoring diary etc, then only you will come to know about the monstrous proportion it is reaching month by month unknowingly
  2. Set time, only one time a day preferably in the late evening before dinner
  3. Fix brands and don't take anything other than a set of fixed brands.
  4. Don't mix beer and hot drinks
  5. Reduce the peg size say 30ml or 45 ml instead of 60 ml or 90 ml. Normally the no. of drinks you take is directly related to the brains feeling of getting intoxicated. If you currently consume 180 ml a day in 2 shots of 90 ml each, you may get the same feeling if you take about 3 shots of 30 ml each.
  6. Drink slowly, when you drink all on a sudden, you are consuming alcohol without realising the effect it is producing on your system
  7. Avoid too much snacks along with drinks. This will reduce the realisation of getting drunk and you tend to take more. It is better to have veg salads in moderate amounts or some pickle rather than non veg snacks like meat fry, chicken lollipops etc.
  8. Drink some water, atleast one glass before you start drinking. Never drink in an empty stomach, it can have disastrous effects.
  9. Try to have atleast one alcohol free day per week and try to make it two or three. This can be made by some strategic decisions - like " I wont drink if the time is past 8 pm" and try to avoid starting to drink by engaging in some other activities. OR "I will not drink after dinner/food"
  10. Avoid drinking in company. If you want a drink, drink it alone. You tend to drink more in company of friends.
  11. Tell all that you are reducing drinks if not avoiding it.
  12. Keep the drinks out of sight. Take the bottle only if you feel comfortable to have a drink. After pouring one drink, you keep the bottle in its original place and drink slowly. And by the time if your wife serves dinner, donot stop her but you start eating dinner without going for a second drink (Which is kept at a place which is not easily accessible)
  13. Say to yourselves and others, "Too much Alcohol is not good"
  14. Don't drink alcohol to quench thirst, If you want to take alcoholic drinks when you are thirsty, first have some plain water of juices to quench your thirst first and then go for alcoholic drinks, if required. Never order in bulk.
  15. Take non alcoholic drinks between two rounds - say fresh juices, tonic  or water.
  16. Fix your maximum no. of drinks, say two or three. (30 ml each)
  17. Don't opt to drink when you are stressed or anxious
  18. In social drinking, don't fall into competition, fix your limit say just one shot and no more. Don't try to drink more than your friend or opponent.
  19. Reduce Non Veg in dinner
  20. Follow some basic rules of drinking
  • Never in day time,
  • Never more than a brand at a time,
  • Never with banana,
  • Never with different people/ anonymous people,
  • Never boast of your drinking capacity or experiences

Did you know? Sugar is also a villain for causing BP

Did you know?
Sugar is also a villain for causing BP. Not only the sugar we eat as sugar or added to tea or coffee. Most of the sugar is taken unknowingly along with junk food. Tomato Ketchup, sauces and the like as well as preparations which use cornstarch (KFC fried chicken, broasted chicken, chilli chicken etc) form a threat.
So,
STOP JUNK FOOD,
Grow veggies fruits and fowls at home.
Stay healthy

It's a bit from experience that I am posting. Today I had some discomfort in my thoracic cavity - felt like some small lightning passing towards the chest area. I was lying down then. I suddenly stood up and the pain was not decreasing. I sat for some time quietly and it started decreasing but the discomfort remained. So I visited doctor and ECG was taken which came out normal. But the BP was higher by 30 points. The the doc was enquiring about food habits and was advised to reduce salt and fried items. Gave some medicine to control acidity and I returned.
Then I started contemplating on the cause. I ate almost the same type of food I was taking. But for a few days I was on tour and was eating from hotels.
Though the food we take is of the same type, there is a lot of difference in the way of cooking at home and in a restaurant.
  • Reusing of cooking oil
  • Adding too much sauces and ketchups
  • Coating fried items with corn starch
  • Use of corn starch in curries to make it thicker
  • Caramelizing to make the appearance appealing.
  • Use of ajinomoto
  • Cooking without proper cleaning of food stuff
  • ... etc...
So, it's always better to grow your own vegetables, fruits, fishes and fowls (if possible cow or goat too for milk). Even those who live on concrete flats can have a small kitchen garden on the balcony or terrace and can grow essential vegetables.

Wish you a healthy life ahead.

Oil Price rising? Have coconuts but no mill nearby or noone to help? Don't worry, you can prepare your own coconut oil at home easily

Edible oil prices are going up. Many are after low cholesterol/no cholesterol oils and coconut oil is a zero cholesterol oil like olive oil.
Though Kerala has a lot of coconut trees, the dependance on coconut oil is fouond decreasing mainly because of the lack of people for doing the labour of plucking coconuts, cleaning, cutting etc and finally taking the dried coconuts to oil mills for extracting the oil.
The traditional methods of extracting the coconut oil is time consuming and cumbersome.
If you have plenty of coconuts, then with two three days of hard work you can get good coconut oil without months of waiting and drying the coconuts in sun etc. You need not even go to the mill for extracting the oil.  Read the method below.

Suppose you have got 10 coconuts.

  1. Peel off the coconuts
  2. Clean the surface of the shell
  3. Break the coconut and collect the water. (You can drink it if you want)
  4. Scrap the coconuts to collect coarse powder of the coconut flesh (and you can use the shell for drying and can be used as fuel for traditional chulhas. The dried coconut shells have many other uses too)
  5. Put the scraped coconut into a fine cloth and extract the milk. (Tiny amounts of water may be added to enhance the extraction)
  6. Now you can drain and fine filter the coconut milk and either
  • heat it continuously till the oil gets separated and the residues get dried up.
 OR

  • Add some warm water to the coconut milk and keep it overnight. In the morning cream will be floating  which can be separated by skimming. Heat the cream in a pan till the oil is formed and the residues get dried up.
Decant the oil and allow it to cool before you transfer it to storage containers.
Get more than half litre coconut oil from 10 coconuts. If you are purchasing coconuts, this method is not advised. Best for those who have a few coconut trees at home.

The main advantage is that there is no need of waiting to get the seeds dried. You can extract oil this way without forming copras.

Tips:
If the climate is too cold, add some warm water to the scraped coconut for better extraction.
After extracting the first set, the residue can be crushed and squeezed again to extract more milk.
